Color Choices for Interior Design Projects
One of the biggest challenges of coming up with a comprehensive, successful interior design idea for your home is making the big, scary decision regarding which colors to use. Will bright, vibrant colors give your home that touch of life you’ve been looking for, or will it be more of a coup de grace? Perhaps more than any other decision within the realm of interior design (materials to use, surfaces to create, textures to apply, etc.), the choice of color will determine the success or failure of your redesign initiative—which is due to the fact that visual aesthetics are more dominant than any other type of aesthetics.
There are simply no simple answers here: it all has to do with an individual’s tastes, what kind of mood they want to establish in their home, and the general style of the home itself. After all, you wouldn’t want to paint the interior of a 200-year-old Tudor home neon orange (or would you?)! Furthermore, there is room for variety within any given home, and not every room needs to convey the same mood. Defining the feel you want each room to impose on people will be the first major step in deciding on the choice of colors for your interior design project.
In general, most homes follow a certain trend: the dining room is usually the most serious and traditional room, whereas bedrooms and bathrooms tend to be on the more eccentric and zany side of things. Living rooms, sun rooms, salons and so on usually fall somewhere in between.
Basically, consider that a balance between primary and secondary colors will do your home justice. Primary colors (red, blue and yellow) tend to convey a highly modern and contemporary feel, whereas secondary colors (all the other ones, especially the duller hues) impart a slightly more conservative, traditionalist tone. Depending on where your sympathies lie in those terms, make the decision that most suits you and stick to it!
